AGRICULTURE

A ministry arm of Nuru Ya Mapendo Kasenga, DRC

One arm of Nuru Ya Mapendo’s ministry is designed to educate and improve quality of life through agriculture. We work with the District-at-large to introduce sustainable agriculture and animal production best practices to families  to provide more nutritious food.

Our goal is to improve health and well-being, with the expectation that practices will be shared with neighbors and friends resulting in increased income to families earning less than $1 per day.

Our education efforts are conducted through David’s House which is centrally located within the District. Follow-up visits are done on site to evaluate benefits and results.  A goat, for example, can require up to 3 months income to purchase. In order to protect their investment, they must have proper knowledge of husbandry, shelter, feeding, forage, reproduction, health care, milking and/or marketing. Classes introduce new crops such as amaranth, moringa and neem. Multi-purpose plants suitable for growing in tropical climates such as lab-lab and chaya from Mexico are also introduced. Reference material used for our classes is available in the David’s House library.
